Why is Scarlett Johansson suing Disney?
For a full decade, Scarlett Johansson was among the most visible stars of the Marvel universe. The first appearance Black Widow made in Iron Man 2. Then after that, she appears in many Marvel and lived the character Black Widow.
But on 29 July 2021 Johansson filed a lawsuit against the former employers at Disney. Scarlett Johansson going head to head against the world one of the biggest franchises Disney who owns Marvel.
From the Johansson attorney, the case could be the tip of the iceberg for future legal action said her lawyer on Wall Street Journal.
Lawyer's Statement: "This will surely not be the last case where Hollywood talents stand up to Disney and make it clear that whatever the company may pretend, it has a legal obligation to honour its contract.
2020 was nobody's favourite year, and it hit the entertainment industry with one punch after another. Entire release slates were pushed a year or more, with drastic action being taken to try and turn movies into Scrooge McDuck money pool before they got too dusty sitting on the shelf. Warner Bros. Shot as wide as possible, announcing a full 12 -month span of flocks debuting simultaneously on HBO max and in whatever theatres we're open at the time. Meanwhile, Disney took small steps to release some of the high budget pictures.
Scarlett Johansson sued Disney because they released movie both on theatres and OTT platforms. Because of that, it causes a loss of money to Johansson about $50m. Also, Scarlett said that they made a contract upon releasing the movie only in theatres.
Although Black Widow got an average response from the theatre. It only earns half of the money that Antman and Wasp made three years back.
On this matter, Disney responds with a statement, "There is no merit whatsoever to this filing. The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney has fully complied with Ms Johansson's contract and the release of Black Widow on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date."
Right now Black Widow character is dead in movies and after this lawsuit, it would be hard to see Johansson in Marvel Movies
